A major watershed between the Appalachian Valley and Highland Ridge is the Wallkill Wildlife Refuge Center. This is a small, but great place to go bird watching so bring your binoculars! Vernon has many hiking trails, but his place is known for bird watching as well. We spotted long legged birds on the water while looking at hawks overhead and other flying feathered friends. The day we visited the Wallkill Wildlife Refuge Center was on an annual event day and the volunteers were giving out free tree saplings. I would suggest visiting on an annual event day where more options are being offered to make your time more memorable. One of the park volunteers mentioned there was free archery lessons on Saturdays. However, I am not sure if this is still being offered as of this posting. Make bird watching a part of your life, it's nice to appreciate these interesting creatures!
