Brandywine Valley Weekend, Chester County, PA

So much to do in Brandywine Valley. Look at what we were able to squeeze in our getaway weekend. Our first stop was West Chester, PA, the county seat of Chester County, PA. This bustling red brick downtown offers lots of restaurants and small shops. The streets were lit up with small twinkling lights hanging above the street, sparkling at night. West Chester University was a quick stop to look at the old stone architecture. The next day we explored Chadds Ford, a countryside town with shopping, art stores and coffee shops in local barns. The highlight of our day was going to the Brandywine River Art Museum where they feature the local famous artist Andrew Wyeth. After lunch we were off to Kenneth Square, the mushroom capital of the world. This was another local downtown selling local food such as cheeses, scones, pies and bookstores, and all kinds of other places to browse. Afterwards we headed south to a more rural part of the county in Oxford where you can find Amish food and antique stores. We kept going south into Rising Sun, Maryland where we went to Dove Valley Winery for a tasting. In the car for more driving...we went to Delaware to explore some towns and found a covered bridge and trail at Ashland Preserve. The next day we went to the local Thornbury Arboretum and headed to Phoenixville for lunch and walked along the Schuylkill River Trail. Lastly, we stopped at Valley Forge National Park. This enormous park which is miles long is filled with trails, monuments, old stone homes and bunkers. This was such a wonderful and memorable weekend. I'll be back for sure.
