A secret little spot near the shore is the Keyport Promenade. I found this on a website called New Jersey isn't boring. So Chris and I decided to check it out one Sunday afternoon. We arrived in less than an hour from central Bergen County. This little, unassuming town is starting to emerge as a cute little place to visit. The promenade along the waterfront is a nice place to walk where you can see noisy seagulls and large boats. We fed the seagulls before noticing a "No feeding the birds" sign (oops). In the far distance, you may even see the bridge to Staten Island. There is a pavilion, playground and colorful mosaic seats to sit and enjoy the view. One street away is Historic Front Street where there are restaurants and antique stores. We stopped by a few antique stores to look at old albums, magazines, retro toys and antique furniture. For dinner, we indulged in a hot, broccoli stuffed calzone at a great pizzeria and then got cappuccino at a brand new Italian storefront offering fresh baked goods daily from Brooklyn. All the local people were humble and inviting. There are also some old historic homes, most likely owned by sea captains long ago. Before we left, we met a long time resident who shared with us all the great places to go. He particularly mentioned the Keyport Fishery where all locals get their crab soup and fried seafood and eat it on the promenade. Casual, unpretentious living. Great time. Great memories with my Chris.
